For everyone frustrated with that big oafish cat
tower in the middle of the living rooms, Julia Szabo, designer of "Animal House Style: Designing a Home to Share With Your Pets," has some creditable advice: "If a house doesn't work with dogs, it won't work with children or guests, either. You can have a smashing house and a pet, too."
We've culled some of Szabo's best tips on devise, and combined them with common sense and a look at the newest dog and cat furniture, to remedy every pet owner create a stylish environment while making pets more easy.
DESIGN 1. Use stain-resistant fabrics. Forget silk, chintz or velvet. Some people say a leather leader is fine around pets, but beware if you have cats. A dog's nails are blunt instruments compared with those needles at the end of pot toes. Cats will scratch most any upright surface that lets them dig in.
