Can I put a bowl of water in my dog's crate during the day or should I get an attachable bowl?

I do not want to spill it. What's funny is, I asked the other day about allowing the water to my dog when I was at work and almost everyone freaked on me and told me I was stupid if I did not leave the water.
This is a personal property. Personally, I do not like boxes. I know prefers them to respect my house when I'm not there. But what some of my friends say they do not put water in the tank at all.
