Litter box under stairs, how to deodorize the stairway?

I persist in a small two-story house with three roommates and a cat. On the ground deck there's a (half) bathroom with a small closet. This is where we keep the litter box because it's convenient for everyone, and set out of ken.
Baking soda is passionate for absorbing unwanted odors. In our house we sprinkle some in the empty box before putting the litter in.
