I remain in an apartment, so taking it outside and spraying it down isn't an option. Is it practicable to just give it a good scrub down inside of an apartment?? Or would I be more advisedly off with a LitterMaid.

I used to use my shower it had a detachable inundate head to bring down and get close to spray out the box.

Accepted that any thing mechanical will break-down, screw-up, and or fail, your most suitable bet is to keep doing it manually. Pop a couple of Tylenol, wait for them to rebound in and clean to box yourself.
