How do I make my 14 year old cat use the litter box again?

My cat adapted to the litter box all his life and, due to a family emergency, was left home with particle attention for quite some time. He was fed and the little boxes were out, but there was little time to play and give attention to him.

About 5 years ago my cat started to intermittently do her business outside her litter box. Gradually she's done so more and more often. She has always been very fussy and cantankerous and shares our national with 2 other cats that she doesn't like. I've tried changing litters
