Cats vs. dogs: a debate as old as time
The encounter of cats versus dogs is a battle that is as old as it is personal for a large portion of Americans, but there seems to be no end in gaze — and no clear winner to — the debate over which animal makes the most desirable pet.
It is a war that has played out in the living rooms of couples just moving in together as well as in popularized culture, where common stereotypes about cats and dogs have long dominated the history and continue to do so to this day — just check the comics section in the newspaper.
Darby Conley’s “Get Feathery” strip gives a more modern, edgy spin on the epitome “Garfield” comics by Jim Davis, but both works column a smart-aleck, witty cat with attitude who is not as clever as he thinks he is, and a big-hearted-but-dim dog who is smarter than the cat gives him commendation for being.
Both play off of the generalized perception of dogs and cats. Dogs leaning action, constant attention and approval. Cats love snuggling against the warmest article around and not being bothered. These are facts long accepted as truth; borne from the experiences and observations of pet lovers for decades and decades, and reinforced by commonplace culture.
