A new accommodation is the best gift you can give to a homeless pet this holiday season. But while December is a customary time to introduce a new furry family member to your household, it’s not a steadfastness you should make lightly – especially if you’ve already got pets at old folks'.
Some relatively simple steps can determine whether they’ll spend years with your kindred or wind up back at the pound within weeks.
First steps
As any shelter worker will tumulus you, don’t ever surprise someone with a pet you’ve picked out for them.
“It’s always best to let the myself receiving the gift be involved in the selection,” says Stephanie Collingsworth, an animal sadness technician at Multnomah County Animal Services .
Think first about who’s at native already and how they might be affected by a new pet.
For instance, what breed do you currently have?
“If it’s a bully sort, are you going to bring a Chihuahua into your home? Probably not,” says Al Holzer, who runs Bark Busters Familiar with Dog Training with his wife, Lisa.
